As part of Emirates’ refurbishment program, 14,000 kg of materials from 16 restored aircraft have been used. Each aircraft would require up to 627 kilograms of seat fabric and roughly 270 kg of leather while the project is ongoing.

A thrifty upcycling project has allowed Emirates’ passionate tailoring team to repurpose over 30,000 pounds of materials from its 2022 retrofitting project—including first-class seating leather, fur from the captain’s seat, nylon from seatbelts, and even aluminium headrests—into suitcases, shoes, and other accessories. According to the airline, each renovated cabin can yield up to 595 pounds of leather and over 1,4000 pounds of seat fabric, which would enable the project to expand even more.

Going green
In addition to its ongoing upcycling project, Dubai-based Emirates has made great strides in recent months toward reaching its net zero carbon targets.
The airline declared in October that it had completed its inaugural flight fueled by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on a route connecting Sydney International Airport (SYD) and Dubai International Airport (DXB). Using a 60/40 Kerosene-SAF blend to simulate jet fuel, the carrier powered one of its gigantic A380s on biofuel for the whole 7,480.7-mile (12,039-kilometre) journey without any issues. This paves the way for more innovations in SAF development and research.
In a statement issued earlier this month, airline president Tim Clark praised the trip and Emirates’ efforts to help customers reduce their carbon footprints.
“We’re moving forward with proactive steps to make more environmentally friendly flying possible both now and in the future.”
One of the other recent initiatives is a partnership with United for Wildlife, whereby the airline is offering a range of new amenity packs on long-haul flights to support wildlife conservation. The kit includes responsibly sourced materials, such as recycled plastic and non-toxic ink made from soy.
