How to Travel While You’re in College

Dreams of travelling the world usually start from schools and colleges, but students always have some or the other reason for leaving those unrealized. When they are in college, they gain some newfound freedom from being always supervised by their parents to being sometimes supervised. Hence, this is the best time to fulfill their dreams of traveling with independence. Don’t know where to start? We’ll help you. Read on to find how you can travel and get freedom in the truest sense.

  1. First, earn and save.

The first and foremost thing to do when you’re planning to travel is you need to earn money yourself and not just depend on your parents.

You can start earning by joining an internship, start work from home part-time, teach tuition to the kids in the neighborhood, or even create saleable works of art and either sell them to your known people or online by listing up in specific sites.

Since travel is your dream, you need to take responsibility for achieving it practically. Once you start earning, set aside some money for your travel goals. Once you’ve saved up the required amount, you can go for a trip.

  1. Opt for internships and volunteering in travel agencies.

Many travel agencies and companies need volunteers and interns who can put in the time and effort required in content, photography, teaching, tour guide, helping older people or young children, social media, and so on.

The interns and volunteers need to work around 7- 8 hours and gain amazing perks such as travelling and food/ accommodation for free. Most, if not all, such travel agencies provide facilities that help them to travel as well, for free or at lowered prices with discounts.

However, don’t just go in for such internships and volunteering experiences thinking it’s all about the travel. Think seriously and carefully whether you’re really capable and interested in doing the work for long hours.

  1. Do your research thoroughly.

No matter a seasoned traveler or a beginner, one of the steps to planning your travel is plan way in advance. First of all, make a list of top 3 places you want to go. After that, research the transportation costs by plane and train. Ensure that you’re browsing in incognito or private browsing mode to avoid price inflation.

Check out what holidays you can travel in, and make a list of it. Also, check out the off season for the destination you want to travel to into account. That is the time the places will get least tourists and prices will be dirt cheap for accommodation and services.

Don’t choose your travel dates when it will be harsh weather in the destinations as well, because most attractions will be closed during that time. Calculate the approximate transportation and accommodation costs for all three locations. Pick the cheapest one.

  1. Travel like the locals.

Think about it, when you book a private cab or transport vehicle to where you want to go after you’ve arrived at your destination, will end up costing you a lot more than you originally planned.

Instead, opt for the local bus, train/ tram and if you’re exploring India, a rickshaw/ auto/ ferry would do the job economically yet nicely. While cutting down on the costs, you can also explore the local culture and daily activities of the people.

  1. Go with friends.

With a group of like-minded people, you’re sure to live every experience to the fullest. Explore all that your destination has to offer when you don’t have to think twice about doing something. A plus point is that it is also cost-effective to share such experiences. When you travel in a group, prices are slashed by more than half when you’re traveling solo. The magic of crazy experiences and the confidence to take steps on their own is something that will leave you with good memories that last forever.
